Window Tinting Laws

As of our last knowledge update in September 2021, We can provide you with information about window tint laws in the UK. However, please note that regulations might have changed since then, so I recommend checking with the appropriate local authorities or official sources for the most up-to-date information. Here's what I can provide based on the information available up to September 2021:

In the UK, window tinting laws are regulated by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), an agency under the Department for Transport. Here are the key regulations for window tinting:

  1. Front Windscreen: The front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through. This means that only a very light tint, often referred to as a "clear" or "limo" tint, is allowed at the very top of the windscreen, usually not extending beyond the manufacturer's shaded band.

  2. Front Side Windows: The front side windows (driver's side and passenger's side) must allow at least 70% of light through. This means that window tints on these windows must be very light and should not significantly reduce visibility.

  3. Rear Side Windows: There are no specific regulations regarding the level of tint on rear side windows.

  4. Rear Windscreen: There are no specific regulations regarding the level of tint on the rear windscreen, but it's recommended to have a good level of visibility for safety reasons.

  5. Tint Darkness: The percentage values mentioned above indicate the amount of visible light that must be allowed to pass through the window. For example, a 70% tint allows 70% of visible light to pass through and blocks 30% of light.

It's important to note that the above regulations apply to vehicles used on public roads. Non-compliant window tints can result in fines and may lead to the vehicle failing its MOT (Ministry of Transport) test, which is required for vehicles in the UK to ensure they meet safety and environmental standards.

Remember that window tint laws can vary by region, and it's always a good idea to consult official sources or seek legal advice to ensure compliance with the most current regulations.

For the most recent and accurate information regarding window tint laws in the UK, you should visit the official website of the Department for Transport or VOSA, or consult a legal professional with expertise in automotive regulations.
